Johannesburg - The SA government confirmed on Sunday night that a French woman died at the residence of a South African diplomat in Paris at the weekend.
French police were investigating the death of the 26-year-old woman after a party, and the SA diplomat had given them a statement, said Clayson Monyela, spokesman for the Department of International Relations and Co-operation.
“It’s a police matter. They are investigating the incident,” he said. “One of our attachés at the embassy had a party with his friends. One of the people who slept over was this young woman, who didn’t wake up.”
French news agency AFP reported that she had stopped breathing after she went to sleep on Saturday afternoon. Monyela said she had gone to sleep on Saturday and was found dead on Sunday morning.
AFP said a judicial source had said an autopsy would take place on Monday. It also said party-goers had alleged the woman had taken drugs. Monyela said he could not comment on the allegation. The French embassy in Pretoria declined to comment.
