Durban - Former KwaZulu-Natal ANC Youth chairman Mthandeni Dlungwane was at the weekend elected unopposed as the chairman of the ANC’s Moses Mabhida region (Pietermaritzburg).

Dlungwane is taking up the position previously occupied by ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma.

“I am humbled by the confidence of the organisation’s branches, in particular, all of them agreeing that I should be the chairman,” he said in an interview on Sunday.

He said he was up to the new task at the provincial general council held in Howick on Saturday.

He also said he had been given other responsibilities at different levels.

Dlungwane has previously served on the regional executive of the ANC Youth league in 1998, and also served as the provincial league chairman in the era of Julius Malema.

After the re-election of Malema for a second term as president, Dlungwane and the then KZN league executive broke ranks with then ANCYL national leadership over the backing of President Jacob Zuma for his re-election in 2012.

The Malema-led national leadership had wanted Zuma replaced by then ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe, which was opposed by Dlungwane and his executive.

This led to disbandment of the KZN executive. It was not until this year that new leadership was elected.

Dlungwane, who is also an MPL, said his immediate task was to unite the region.
