Polokwane - The final EFF rally ahead of Wednesday’s local government elections, dubbed the “Tshela Thupa” rally, got off to a vibrant start at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane, Limpopo.

Thousands of members clad in EFF red enjoyed entertainment from various musicians and dance groups as they waited to be addressed by EFF leader, Julius Malema.

The 46 000 capacity stadium had only a few seats left empty by midday on Sunday. The party and its supporters are pulling out all the stops put on an impressive showing, both in the stadium and on social media, as the battle for hearts and minds reaches its climax ahead of Wednesday.

Parties have competed over their respective abilities - or lack thereof - to fill mega stadiums throughout the campaigning period. The competition for live TV coverage has also been fierce, and billions have been spent on advertising campaigns, especially by the ANC, DA, and EFF, the three major parties in these polls. The ANC hosts its own final rally in Johannesburg today, while the DA had its final event in on Saturday in Soweto.

EFF members said they were excited to celebrate their “pending” victory at the polls. The EFF is relying on its popularity in provinces like Limpopo where Malema and other party leaders hail from to make a mark in local government.

Malema has said the elections would be a measure how the party would fair during the national elections in 2019.
