Mthatha - A presiding officer and a deputy at King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality’s Emaweni voting station near Mthatha were fired on Wednesday morning by the IEC after influencing people in the area on who to vote for.

The IEC’s Provincial Electoral Officer in the Eastern Cape, Thami Mraji, said the commission was made aware of the conduct of the officials by a party agent. After investigation, the presiding officer and a deputy at the station were then fired.

It is not clear how many voters were influenced this way. Mraji said the two officials had been replaced.

Meanwhile, gale force winds affected about eight wards in the fiercely contested Nelson Mandela Bay.

The IEC said tents used as voting stations were blown away the wind but were later re-erected.
