Durban - IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi turned 86 on Wednesday, his party said.
“Today the Inkatha Freedom Party celebrates the birthday of our president... by thanking him for his great contribution to South Africa's liberty and democracy,” secretary general Sibongile Nkomo said in a statement.
He described Buthelezi as one of the country's finest leaders, an elder statesman with the courage of his convictions and deep-rooted integrity.
Nkomo said the IFP was celebrating his “exceptional leadership” that continued to guide the party in serving the country.
“We admire Prince Buthelezi's dedication, energy and strength. Truly he serves for the love of country. The greatest gift we can give him on his birthday is to follow his example and give selflessly of ourselves for the betterment of South Africa.
“On behalf of all South Africans, and many friends throughout the world, we wish Prince Buthelezi all the happiness he so richly deserves as he celebrates his birthday.”
