Parliament - Parliament has picked the next Public Protector after it reached consensus on State Security Agency official advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane to succeed Thuli Madonsela.

The appointment of Mkhwebane by the ad hoc committee on Wednesday followed a gruelling process to find a suitable candidate.

All parties in the National Assembly’s ad hoc committee backed Mkhwebane with the exception of the DA, which reserved its support.

The full sitting of the National Assembly will have to endorse Mkhwebane’s appointment next Wednesday, which is the deadline to get the next public protector.

Mkhwebane was a senior investigator in the Office of the Public Protector from 1998 until 2005 when she left to join Home Affairs as a director.

However, parties were not impressed with her explanation on why she left the top job at home affairs to join the State Security Agency.

They gave her their full support and said she must continue where Madonsela left off.
