Parliament - A proposal to limit the number of notices of motion and motions without notice to three per party was agreed to in the National Assembly on Thursday, despite objections from the EFF.
The motion was moved by African National Congress chief whip Stone Sizani, ahead of debate on a report recommending the suspension of 12 Economic Freedom Fighters MPs from Parliament.
A meeting of party chief whips on Wednesday decided to limit the number of motions to prevent a filibuster delaying the start of what is widely expected to be a tense debate.
All parties present in the House, with the exception of the EFF, supported the motion, including the Democratic Alliance.
“We support the motion for this day only,” the DA's Mike Waters told the House.
EFF chief whip Floyd Shivambu objected, saying his party had not been invited to the previous day's chief whips meeting. He also told the House that the motion was a “violation of the rules of the National Assembly”.
After listening to declarations from parties, Speaker Baleka Mbete declared the motion agreed to.
