Cape Town - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has taken the Andrew Barnes incident in her stride – cracking a joke or two about the situation at a function on Tuesday.

“I almost slipped, Andrew was going to see me again,” she said with a smile after nearly mispronouncing a word during a speech at the 2015 National Senior Certificate Awards Ceremony at the premier’s official residence Leeuwenhof on Tuesday.

Later she mispronounced a word and quipped: “Andrew Barnes again.”

  Suspended Barnes sorry for gaffe

Barnes, an eNCA senior anchor, found himself in hot water last week after he mocked Motshekga’s pronunciation of the word “epitome” on live television. His remarks raised the ire of many South Africans on social media.

He has been taken off air and on Tuesday the Cape Argus reported that the disciplinary process against him was still under way.

The 24-hour channel and Barnes have issued apologies.
