Johannesburg - Newly appointed Communications Minister Yunus Carrim met the SABC board and addressed staff on Wednesday.

“The aim was to hear from the SABC what their challenges are, what progress there's been since the interim board was appointed, and how the department can offer more assistance to the SABC to become more stable... and more effective,” Carrim said in a statement.

In April, President Jacob Zuma approved the interim board, which was installed after the resignations of most of its members in March, and its eventual dissolution by Parliament.

Their departure came after a reported clash between previous chairman Ben Ngubane and the board over the tenure of previous acting chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Carrim said the board and management had agreed to settle outstanding problems related to digital migration, and to fill senior management posts urgently.

Carrim replaced Communication Minister Dina Pule, who was one of three ministers fired by Zuma last week. - Sapa
