NWest ANC PEC members removed

Five members of the North West ANC's leadership were “unconstitutionally” removed from their positions, the party said on Monday.

Provincial chairman Supra Mahumapelo and four others were dismissed during the party's meeting at the weekend, African National Congress secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said in a statement.

“The ANC calls on the structures of the ANC in the North West province to desist from activities of this nature which have the potential of bringing instability, undermine our leadership in society and as well as bring the name of the organisation into disrepute,” Mantashe said.

The four are: provincial treasurer Philly Mapolane, deputy provincial secretary Gordon Kegakilwe, provincial spokesman Kenny Morolong and provincial executive (PEC) council member Matthew Wolmarans.

Mantashe said national officials would meet the North West ANC on Tuesday.

“The national officials and the national executive council deployees in the North West fully recognise the PEC as elected in the last North West provincial conference in 2011. We call upon all structures in the North West to equally recognise the PEC as such.”

Police had to use teargas to separate two ANC groups that clashed in Mahikeng on Sunday before the start of the party's provincial general council.

According to the SABC, the squabble apparently broke out when supporters of provincial secretary Kabelo Mataboge prevented Mahumapelo's supporters from entering the venue. - Sapa
