Cape Town - Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi has reportedly defended President Jacob Zuma over the controversial upgrade to his Nkandla homestead.

According to EWN, Nxesi told the National Assembly on Tuesday that Zuma was not to blame for the upgrade, estimated to end up costing taxpayers around R230 million.

The report said that

while Nkandla was not officially dealt with in the National Assembly, DA MP Anchen Dreier asked a question about the multi-million rand property upgrade and labelled Zuma an enemy of the poor.

Cope’s Smuts Ngonyama also said it was not acceptable.

“Under the circumstances, spending scarce resources on Nkandla is scandalous and immoral. Expenditure on the consumption site must be reduced,” Ngonyama was quoted as saying.

Nxesi insisted the details could not be made public, EWN said.

“Members are aware of the legal constraints on providing information in relation to a national key point and we have proven that it is a national key point,” Nxesi reportedly said. - IOL
