The controversial DA Students Organisation (DASO) poster.
DA Youth leader Makashule Gana has leapt to defend the new ad campaign for his party’s student wing, which features a poster with a partially nude black and white couple locked in an embrace.
The picture of the young white man and black woman staring into one another’s eyes was posted on the DA Youth’s Facebook page and was used as Gana’s Twitter avatar – profile picture.
The plan is to use it on posters that will soon be seen on campuses across the country.
Khanya Sigcawu hailed the poster, saying it was a “cool one”and adding: “(DA Students’ Organisation) reflects the South Africa we’re living in today.”
Verna Rainers did not share this sentiment, saying: “Terrible poster. It’s like the United Colors of Benetton advert from the 80s and I’d like to think we have moved on… Why is there such a mediocre understanding of race?
“It’s horrible.”
Gana said the campaign was aimed at sparking debate around the issue of race in a bid to create an open, non-racial society.
“We are a new generation of people and leaders and we want to create a particular society, (one in which) you wouldn’t look twice when you see something like this. We are talking about the future.”
Gana defended the concept of the poster – the first in a series – saying it was “not about sex”, was “far from pornography”, “definitely not in bad taste” and not intended to encourage sexual activity among the youth.
“The racists will say it’s racist… we can’t pretend race isn’t an issue. People have a problem with being naked. They are scared of seeing themselves… I don’t get it,” said Gana.
* Meanwhile, Refiloe Nt’sekhe has been named the DA’s provincial spokeswoman in Gauteng.
Nt’sekhe matriculated from Pretoria High School for Girls in 1994 and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a BA in political philosophy. She also has a marketing diploma. She is a ward councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metro and the party’s spokeswoman on health and social development. Political Bureau

Every white South African benefited from the Apatheid system whether they supported the system or not. Then then laws favoured white people.....

The DA has reduced itself to the lowest levels. Agreed, we need to embrace each other and move on...but to depict a young black lady and an older white man, seemingly nude and making love is distasteful......

@ Mthoko Jula. Just to point out the obvious again, 80% of the land in this country is owned BY THE GOVERNMENT. The land that is owned by the farmers is for a good cause, like feeding us. Bring your head into the present and the future, stop living in the past.

While I don't think it's the best executed concept, I at least understand what they were trying to do. But I don't think it's necessary to say it. It's like saying one day you'll be seeing more electric cars on the road. Duh! I'm seeing more and more mixed race couples these days, and it's nothing new anymore, so why say anything about it. I'm glad the DA is going even more multiracial than ever before, but just do it with more thought. We don't need to create more "contraversy" around race in this country. Just let it play out naturally.

@Mthoko Jula.... it has been 18 years now get over it! We will not apologise for bettering the country. It would still have been like the rest of Africa if not for us. I am not a racist but face the truth. You have what you have today because of us. You have it a lot better than in other countries. Believe me I have worked all over Africa! Get over yourself you have had long enough to stop blaming the whities for everything. Rather speak to your government to stop blundering and raping our country. The likes aof Zuma and Malema will be the downfall of this country. Getting away eith murder......

Dear Mthoko Jula, you seem to think every single white person agreed with the previous govenment. This is completely untrue and i hardly know any that dodid. . Please dont put everybody into one pot and please dont expect everybody to apologise because many , like me, are on your side. People calle Zille a racist but she fought to end apartheid. The ANC is succesfully turning races against each other, lets at least appreciate that the DA is attempting to do the opposite.

Jula, when you know what you're talking about then please add something but i've never read such utter rubbish in my life before.I don't own 80% of the land and i'm white. Am i to blame for my forefathers mistakes when i was not even born? Get over yourself, if its not about colour then whats the issue? The ills of the past.....we are talking 20 years ago- when will you ever get over the ills of the past? never because its always easier to blame the whites than to accept that the ANC is destroying our country due to corruption and in house fighting! Get a grip and stop moaning about the past - if Mandela can forgive and move on then so should you.

first reaction was that the DA was endorsing a condom, but as we walk around campus, black guys were saying now the DA wants to take our women like they forefathers did with our land, so it's a bad move by the DA, they just lost male youth voters .

Hi All,I look forward to a bright future in sa. On the Topic : The Ad displays diversity and encouraging us to love one another irrespective of colour. One must let go of the past and embrace the future. One of my closest friends is white yet he would as they say "have my back" in any situation, God Forbid. We make colour and race a barrier for ourselves.Stop this hate amongst each other and stand united.Rather than pointing fingers lets find a solution together. If we were at war with Nigeria; would a nigerian say let me not kill you coz you are black but rather kill the whites? I think not.Lets fight corruption and end the self enrichment of the ANC. Vote DA - Gove them a chance and should they fail you; you as the people can always replace them.Wots the worst that can happen. N no we will never go back to the aprtheid days if thats what you are going to say.Have a blessed year people.

I am so tired iof the racist policies of the ANC where they have institutionalised racism. As white males, we are tired of being discriminate against, even though we were too young to have been involved with apartheid. No jobs for white males, no social handouts, even for university we have to get significantly more marks than blacks, just to get in. Be careful of what you wish for, you just may get the bloodshed you predict, but it may not be the blood you want to see shed. At least the DA has moved on from racism. Incidentally, that black chick is cool - and I bet she is also educated, funny, smart etc.

So you are telling me that the only thing that people see in this poster are black and white? South Africa will be a much better place when we see 2 people, not 2 colours

I like the concept but not the nudity. DA has just dropped its standards and I am very disapointed.

I have no problem with the ad. What two adults do in the privacy of their home is none of my business. I would however have chosen a different theme to the ad, for a politically affliated grouping. We need less sex and more talking and resolving issues of non-delivery. When a grouping presents an image they cannot sustain, we call it pandering and I feel the DA is not is still stuck in white baas and black maids
so what..., wrote
dont you have something else to debate about, What is new now

DA needs to firstly transform itself before it could recruit black voters. we hardly date one another, we hardly share rooms in varsities and they have all the wealth at their disposal, while we don't. they still own more than 80% of this country's land while we don't. we forgave them for all the wrongs they did to black people during their era instead of embracing us, they never even came clean at the TRC. I think until such time white people of this country unequivocally apologise to black people, they should kiss racism good bye. DA can get black votes yes I agree but if the ills of the past is not addressed, this country is heading bloodshed. we are hungry and are becoming impatient.
