Johannesburg – Economic Freedom Fighters supporters wearing signature red berets arrived in taxis, buses, and on foot at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg, on Saturday for the launch of the EFF’s August 3 local government elections manifesto.

Dressed in red overalls, skirts, dresses, and T-shirts, they entered the stadium in groups, sang and danced, praising party leader Julius Malema.

“… mayihlom’ ihlasele… imali yethu siya ifuna… kuzoliwa ePalamente! [lets get ready to fight… we want our money back… we’re going to fight in Parliament],” they sang as they waved red flags.

They carried placards depicting images of Malema and waved EFF flags high, as police police kept an eye on them, many of whom were youngsters. Hawkers lined the street leading to the stadium entrance selling food, water, cold drinks, and snacks. Others sold EFF merchandise, such as caps, T-shirts, and berets.

Malema is expected to present the EFF manifesto and outline his party’s plans for local government.

Opposition parties, such as the EFF and the Democratic Alliance, have upped the ante and campaigned vigorously in the strategic metros, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, in Gauteng and Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape. All are vying for a piece of the pie as support for the governing ANC appears to have slightly decreased, especially in Nelson Mandela Bay.
