A request to Parliament's police portfolio committee for a special hearing into the saga around police intelligence head Richard Mdluli was denied on Thursday.

Portfolio committee chairwoman Sindy Chikunga told the SABC that her committee was not a court of law and so it could not do anything.

“Charges needed to be responded to in a court of law...the portfolio committee can't do anything,” she said.

Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard on Wednesday said the “debacle” around the appointment of Mdluli had be subjected to proper parliamentary scrutiny.

She said she was writing to Chikunga to request a special hearing.

Criminal charges relating to the murder in 1999 of Mdluli's ex-girlfriend's boyfriend Oupa Ramogibe were recently withdrawn against him, court orderly Samuel Dlomo, Colonel Nkosana Sebastian Ximba, and Lieutenant-Colonel Mtunzi-Omhle Mthembeni Mtunzi.

An inquest is being held into Ramogibe's death.

The fraud and corruption charges, relating to improper use of crime intelligence money, were also dropped. - Sapa
