A Cape Town talk radio station said on Thursday it had obtained documents that proved that the expelled Cape Metropolitan Council mayor, William Bantom, had viewed child pornography, despite his denials.

Bantom was sacked from the New National Party and divested of his mayoral chain on Tuesday after he was caught watching porn in his office and downloading pornographic material off the Internet.

Earlier on Thursday, Bantom issued a statement denying he had ever viewed child pornography on the Internet or watched child pornography videos.

He refuted claims by the Western Cape premier, Gerald Morkel, that officials had caught him viewing at least one site which involved children performing sexual acts with adults.

"It is true that I saw some pornography on the Internet, but I would never watch child porn - I find it morally repugnant," said Bantom, an ordained church minister.

"I must also make it quite clear that I have not been involved in inappropriate behaviour involving children."

Bantom, who has chaired the CMC since its 1996, is spending time with his family after the shock announcement on Tuesday that he had been ordered to resign from the NNP. He has also quit his mayoral post.

He said that when he felt "more composed", he would call a news conference to "give my side of the story".

Cape Talk reported on Thursday that it had got hold of computer records from the mayor's office for October last year. According to the records, much of what was downloaded was erotic literature that involved incest and children having sex with their parents.

The station said the records showed Bantom spent hours on the Internet every day. He used his credit card to subscribe to many sites that are too X-rated for even the most hardened porn lovers.

The station said the erotic literature contained no graphics but almost all the features based their storylines on incest.

One of the station's reporters logged on to what appeared to be a frequently downloaded page. Most of them involved fetishes that went beyond hardcore pornography, the station said.

These sites were not erotic or even arousing. They were sites with visuals that included bestiality, adults with a fetish for faeces as well as elderly men and women engaging in sexual acts.

The station said it was not prepared to pay for access to sites that required a weekly fee. It appeared Bantom was as he subscribed to several sites with his credit card.
