Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday encouraged the SABC to tell African stories that reflected the continent's progress.

Its 24 hour news channel should not only focus on crime and corruption, but reflect the country's good qualities, he said at the new channel's launch, in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

“I hope this channel will change the attitude and make South Africans proud of what they have been able to achieve on their own. In short, the true South African story is waiting to be told.”

The channel broadcasts on DStv's channel 404, and is scheduled to start broadcasting from 6pm. Zuma said it would play a pivotal role in society as media was an important communication tool.

“The growth of the broadcast sector... is remarkable,” said Zuma.

Delegates attending the launch included Zuma's Lesotho counterpart Tom Thabane, Communications Minister Yunus Carrim and soccer administrator Irvin Khoza.
