Johannesburg - Residents of Freedom Park, Soweto, on Wednesday called on the ANC to create jobs and houses.
African National Congress treasurer Zweli Mkhize was on a campaign trail in Freedom Park, Soweto. He was accompanied by former soccer player Kgomotso “Tso” Vilakazi, Derrick Spencer, and Miss Soweto, Makhanani Chabalala to woo residents' votes.
“As you can see, I am barefoot and don't have shoes... I need a job. They tell me I am old wherever I go to seek work,” said Flora Maswanganyi, 52.
The mother of three said she wanted nothing from government but jobs for her and her children.
Mkhize said the ANC government had initiated development projects in Freedom Park to create jobs.
“We want you to get work through these projects, your children should go register at FET colleges and get bursaries... so that they can study,” he told Maswanganyi.
Near Maswanganyi's RDP house, Mkhize greeted Salome Maleke, 30. She said she did not qualify for one or a bond to buy a house.
“My vote is my secret... but I am telling you that we need good housing and a clinic around here,” she told Mkhize.
He told her, as construction vehicles drove in and out of the area, that more housing developments were in the pipeline and that Maleke would get a dwelling. - Sapa
