Parliament - The National Assembly has not received an application by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to table a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma, Parliament said on Thursday.
“Parliament has noted with concern incorrect claims circulating in the media that the Economic Freedom Fighters has written to the Speaker’s office requesting the National Assembly to debate the motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma. No such correspondence has been received by the office of the Speaker,” it said.
An EFF source told Independent Media on Tuesday that the party had applied to National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete for an urgent vote of no confidence in Zuma to be included in the order paper of Tuesday's sitting.
The source said that the request was with the Speaker who had yet to decide on whether to grant the request. A source also revealed that Mthembu would support the request from the EFF.
But later on Tuesday EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi denied this.
“EFF does not get involved in squabbles of saving ANC from itself. Let them keep us out of it! Zuma & ANC must fall!” Ndlozi tweeted on Tuesday. This came after attempts by a few Cabinet ministers to have Zuma removed as ANC leader failed at the party’s extended national executive committee meeting that ended on Monday.
ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said on Tuesday that the request by some members of the national executive committee to Zuma to step down had failed, and that the members instead agreed to work on unifying the ruling party, Mantashe said.
