Strike over IEC head averted

Durban - A strike at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over its chairwoman, Pansy Tlakula, has been averted.

The National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), which is the largest labour body at the IEC, has instead decided to continue talks with the commission.

Nehawu spokesman, Sizwe Pamla, said the union would hold a meeting at national level with IEC officials over its concerns on Tuesday.

A strike at the IEC would have destabilised the Chapter Nine institution as 65 percent of its employees are members of Nehawu. It could have disrupted the smooth running of the elections on May 7.

On Monday, Pamla said the union would not give up on its call for Tlakula to be dismissed or resign.

Nehawu and opposition political parties are baying for Tlakula’s blood following her being implicated in a PricewaterhouseCoopers forensic audit as well as Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report into the leasing of the IEC’s R320 million office in Centurion, Pretoria.
