Rustenburg – The ANC in North West will ensure that all municipalities in the province remain under the control of the ANC after this year’s local government elections, provincial chairman Supra Mahumapelo said on Saturday.

“The ANC will ensure that all 22 municipalities in this province remain under the control of the ANC. We are going to make sure that the ANC wins the local government election decisively,” he said at the ANC’s 104th anniversary celebrations in Phokeng, near Rustenburg.

Opposition parties in North West are positioning themselves to take over Tlokwe and Rustenburg municipalities from the ANC.

The DA has made it known that it wants to control the Tlokwe municipality in Potchefstroom.

The DA went to court in an attempt to stop the merger of Tlokwe and Ventersdorp municipalities.

The party argued that the merger of the two municipalities was political because the ANC had realised that it would lose Tlokwe and wanted to cling to power through the back door.

The Economic Freedom Fighters has publicly declared its intention to wrest power from the ANC in Rustenburg and other municipalities in the Bojanala platinum district municipality.
