Johannesburg - A former leader of the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and 3 other top officials were arrested by the Hawks on Tuesday, Independent Media has learnt.
The union has been struggling to shake off a cloud of suspicion since the disappearance of R136m from its coffers.
It is understood that the Hawks carried out an operation against officials suspected of having a hand in some of the financial irregularities at Samwu.
Just less than a month ago, the union covered up a Hawks raid at its head office in Johannesburg where files were seized. The union is also currently holding its central executive committee.
A union consultant, Samuel Phaswane was arrested earlier this year over allegations of fraud.
