Pretoria - The ANC in Tshwane elected new leaders at its regional conference held in Pretoria at the weekend, the party in Gauteng said on Monday.
Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa retained his position of chairman of the region. Deputy Mapiti Matsena also retained his position.
Paul Mojapelo was elected regional secretary, with George Matjila as his deputy and Dolly Ledwaba as treasurer.
The African National Congress in Gauteng congratulated the region on holding a successful elective conference.
“The Tshwane regional conference was conducted with utmost political maturity and discipline and represents the best approximation of holding a conference in accordance with the ANC constitution,” spokesman Dumisa Ntuli said in a statement.
“The result of the leadership represents the democratic views and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the members of the ANC in the region.”
According to reports, Ramokgopa has come under heavy criticism from the Tshwane SA Communist Party, the Congress of SA Trade Unions, the SA Students Congress, the ANC Youth League and the Young Communist League. The group have accused him of presiding over a corrupt municipality, Pretoria News reported on Friday.
The organisations were due to march to the Union Buildings on Friday demanding that the municipality be dissolved and placed under administration, according to the report.
They were also calling for Ramokgopa to be replaced as regional chairman and as mayor.
In July, a group claiming that ANC members in the region were unhappy with the audit of branches ahead of the regional conference stormed the party's office in Pretoria.
