Johannesburg - Two ANC members died on their way to its anniversary celebrations and elections manifesto launch in Nelspruit, the party said on Tuesday.

Mahambule Greatwell Mngmezulu, of Balfour, was run over when he alighted from a bus taking supporters to the stadium in Mbombela on Saturday, African National Congress spokesman Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

A second person was injured and was treated and discharged from Rob Ferreira Hospital.

Mthembu said another member, Khethiwe Joyce Mdluli, of Hazyview, died in Themba Hospital, where she was taken when she collapsed after complaining of a headache while collecting food in White River.

“The organisation is much poorer for having lost loyal, disciplined and activist comrades,” he said, conveying condolences to their family and friends.

“It is our hope that the knowledge of a loss shared by all of us would make the burden of grief that has engulfed these families and communities that much lighter to bear.” - Sapa
