Voters turned away in Diepsloot

Johannesburg - Voters who turned up shortly after 9pm were turned away at a voting station in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

A woman carrying a baby on her back arrived at Diepsloot Combined School polling station at 9.15pm and was told by a police officer that no one was allowed to enter the premises after 9pm.

Five more people arrived and argued with the officers, who would not let them in.

“I just came from work... not everyone was on a holiday. There are people still queuing inside but we're refused entry,” a man told the officers at the gate.

The group demanded to speak to the Independent Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) staff member in charge of the station.

“I am not letting you through, where were you when people started queuing in the morning?” an officer asked them, making them more angry.

The group accused him of neglecting his duties.
