Zuma going to Ethiopia

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma would attend the signing of a peace, security and cooperation framework for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes Region, in Ethiopia, on Sunday, the Presidency said.

Spokesman Mac Maharaj said the ceremony would also be attended by presidents and representatives of the DRC, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane would accompany Zuma to the ceremony, to be held at the African Union's (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa.

Maharaj said that the AU and United Nations had been working with other international organisations to promote peace, security, stability and development in the region.

A pact in this regard was signed in December 2006, and the proposed framework built on this by setting out commitments for the DRC, the Great Lakes Region and the international community.

“It also includes an oversight mechanism to facilitate follow-up and implementation of the commitments made,” Maharaj said. - Sapa
