Durban - Police have urged people to make use of electronic banking facilities when making or receiving payments, after a stokvel robbery.

Jabulani Mdlalose, 56, was attacked and robbed of R140 000 in stokvel money as he left a bank in Church Street in the Pietermaritzburg city centre on Monday afternoon.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said Mdlalose was confronted by two unknown men.

“The suspects took a plastic bag containing the stokvel money from Mdlalose and fled in a Fiat Uno,” he said. Mdlalose was not injured.

“As we are approaching the end of the year, many stokvel clubs will be distributing contributions to their members. We are urging these clubs to transfer these funds electronically to their members’ accounts to avoid them being robbed,” Zwane said.
