The body of a four-year-old boy, who was reported missing over the weekend, washed up on Strand Beach on Sunday, the City of Cape Town's disaster management centre said.

Abukwe Themba was accompanied by his grandmother and uncle when he went missing at about 5pm on Saturday, said spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.

He was reported missing to the authorities at about 9.15pm.

“Following the incident, the officers of the city’s law enforcement and specialised services together with the police initiated a search mission for the child and found the body washed ashore at 3.30am this Sunday morning,” he said.

Police have opened an inquest docket and an autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death. - Sapa
