Very cold conditions were prevalent across the country on Friday, the SA Weather Service said.

It was raining in Bloemfontein, and the cold front – which had already hit Gauteng and the Cape – was also approaching the Lowveld of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, said forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng.

“It is cold to very cold over much of the country... and the cold front will hit Limpopo and Mpumalanga by 2pm,” he said.

“But starting from tomorrow (Saturday), there will be a slight temperature increase.”

It was very cold in the northern interior of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, and Lesotho and the southern Free State.

It was cold in southern Gauteng, from Joburg to Vereeniging, and cool in Pretoria.

The weather service defines very cold as anything below 10 degrees Celcius, cold is between 10 and 17 degrees Celcius and cool is between 18 and 25 degrees Celcius.

The rain in Bloemfontein would start subsiding by late Friday morning, while light showers were also expected in the Eastern Cape and southern Free State.

On Saturday, rain was expected in KwaZulu-Natal, and more rain had been forecast for the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday.

Light snowfall was expected in the Lesotho area. – Sapa
