Johannesburg - The N1 near Beaufort West and the N12 at Victoria West were re-opened on Sunday evening after closing due to snowfall, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

Spokesperson Ashraf Ismail said traffic was heavy on the south towards Cape Town, particularly with heavy goods trucks that had been delayed by the weather.

Ismail urged motorists to use “extreme caution and not take any unnecessary risks” as roads were heavily congested across the country.

Two major roads in the Eastern Cape remain closed - the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock and the N6 between Jamestown and Aliwal North.

The country experienced freezing weather conditions at the weekend with heavy rain and snowfall in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and the Free State.

Disaster management teams have had their hands full trying to assist motorists stuck on the roads.

“We want to appeal to people to keep within speed limits and adjust speeds according to prevailing conditions and to maintain safe following distances and be extremely careful when overtaking,” Ismail said. - Sapa
