The bodyguard of the Nelson Mandela metro's deputy mayor has been shot by two unknown men, Eastern Cape police said Tuesday.
Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said the 44-year-old man was approached by two unknown men around 9pm on Monday evening.
He is the bodyguard of deputy mayor Nancy Sihlwayi.
“The men drew firearms and a shootout ensued. The bodyguard was hit in the upper body,” Gwavu said.
He said the man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was stable.
“The two men fled with the bodyguard's firearm, wallet and cellphone.”
Police were investigating a case of armed robbery.
Gwavu said no arrests had been made. - Sapa
