Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage police were still searching on Wednesday for two people who went missing during a storm in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu said John Smit, 19, was swept off a bridge in Kwanobuhle on Sunday.

“... Divers swam with their dogs up to the Swartkops river, but have had no success thus far,” she said.

“The search for Smit will continue.”

A 32-year-old Kirkwood man was also missing.

He was swept away by the Wit river on Saturday. A friend who was with him was rescued by a passer-by.

“The waters of the Wit river are still very dangerous to enter and police will continue the search for him tomorrow, once the water has subsided,” said Naidu.

Heavy rain fell in the Eastern Cape at the weekend and several roads were closed due to flooding rivers. - Sapa
