Johannesburg - Four pupils were killed when a bakkie overturned in Libode, near Mthatha, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Nine others were injured in the accident on Wednesday, police spokesman Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The driver picked up 13 pupils from Mabalengwe Senior Secondary school. He apparently lost control of the vehicle in the rain. Two boys and two girls were killed. The driver was seriously injured.The injured were taken to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

Eastern Cape health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo confirmed that 10 people had been admitted to the hospital and that four pupils died on the scene.
