Pretoria – The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) on Monday confirmed that two soldiers who went missing at sea off the Eastern Cape coast more than a week ago, were still missing.

The two SANDF members went missing at sea while off-duty and swimming at Second Beach Port St Johns on April 16. It is believed they got into trouble when sea conditions changed drastically.

On Monday the SANDF identified the two as Staff Sergeant Mcedisi Rudolf Mandyu, 48, of Worcester and who was stationed at the SA Army Infantry School in Oudtshoorn, and Private Themba Nelson Sithole, 27, of Rustenburg who worked at 1 Para Battalion in Bloemfontein.

SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said the members had not yet been located and were still declared missing at sea.

“The search and rescue mission is still active,”Mabanga said. “The search is still on and the family members have been informed and have visited the scene of the incident.”
