East London -

Two people died when a fire ripped through an informal settlement in Duncan Village, East London, at the weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Captain Stephen Marais said the victims of the fire, a man and a woman in their 30s, burned while they were sleeping in their shack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He said 50 shacks were destroyed by the fire and that the affected residents were rebuilding their homes.

“The cause of the fire was unknown and an inquest docket has been opened,” Marais said. - Sapa
