The four accused in the Franschhoek Pass murder trial were on Tuesday found guilty in the Cape High Court on two counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of aggravated robbery.

Henrico Pietersen, 18, Morne Craig Lakay, 23, Dawid Williams, 23, and Jehan Abrahams, 27, were found guilty of murdering Dorian van Rensburg and Marisa du Toit and attempting to murder Audrey Myburgh.

A fifth member of the gang, Patrick van Schalkwyk, who turned state witness, was granted indemnity against prosecution after Judge Deon van Zyl said he was more than satisfied with his testimony.

Van Zyl said the case resulted from the "shocking events" that happened at a viewing spot on the Franschhoek Pass on July 7 last year.

On that day, Van Rensburg, (son of Stellenbosch academic Professor Boet van Rensburg), Du Toit and Myburgh went up the pass in Van Rensburg's black VW Golf.

The judge said the three victims were there to enjoy the beauty of the pass.

Shortly after they had stopped at the viewing spot, a blue Ford Sierra stopped alongside them.

The judge said the beauty of the area did not concern the five occupants of the Sierra at all and their sickly thoughts dwelled on evil of the worst degree.

The judge said this was apparent from the fact that within a few minutes the accused began robbing the innocent and harmless young people without the least resistance from them.

The court adjourned briefly for the state and defence teams to address the judge on sentence. - Sapa
