Johannesburg - A minibus rolled this morning in Roodepoort, injuring 21 children on their way to school.

ER24 said their paramedics, along with other services, found the minibus on the side of the road and most of the occupants outside the vehicle.

“Paramedics found that 21 children had been injured after their vehicle rolled and crashed through a fence,” said ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring. “Paramedics assessed the children, believed to be aged between 6 and 12, and found that they had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported on the scene.”

Paramedics treated them and took them to various hospitals, including Laratong and Helen Joseph.

On Monday a taxi man was shot dead and four others seriously injured in rush-hour violence in Midrand in a clash linked to taxi-industry conflicts.

Police said that at about 5pm, a group of taxi owners were on a routine patrol of the taxis that work on the Midrand-to-Ivory Park and the Midrand-to-Alexandra routes when a group of assailants opened fire on them.

According to Emer-G-Med’s Maxwell Cohen, one person died on the scene and four others were seriously injured. Police said the injured were transported to a hospital in Tembisa and were in a stable condition.

Gauteng SAPS spokesman Major Mack Mngomezulu said the police suspected the motive for the shooting may be related to taxi violence, as the targets were all from the taxi industry. He couldn’t say for sure which taxi association they were from.

“We have seen in recent months some violence, with taxi associations rivalling for the Midrand-to-Ivory Park route, so this incident may be related,” Mngomezulu said.

He said the police opened a case of murder and attempted murder, and no arrests had yet been made.

The police are monitoring the situation closely.
