Johannesburg - A pregnant woman was in a critical condition on Thursday morning after a collision between two vehicles in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said the accident occurred at Great North and Elgin Road intersection.

“Paramedics, along with provincial services, responded through the heavy morning traffic, and on arrival, they found one vehicle lying off on the side of the road while the second sat in the middle of the intersection.”

Meiring said that paramedics found that a woman who was eight months pregnant, lay trapped inside the passenger seat of the vehicle in a critical condition.

“Provincial services used the jaws-of-life equipment to free the woman from the wrecked vehicle,” he said.

“Once freed, paramedics treated and provided advanced life support interventions to the patient,” Meiring said.

The ER24 helicopter was called to transport the critically injured woman to a private hospital for urgent treatment.

Two other people were found on scene with minor injuries, they were treated and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities are investigating.
