Johannesburg - Matric pupils got a crash course on the Struggle for liberation from former freedom fighters during a dialogue at Freedom Park over the weekend.
Ela Gandhi (granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi), Pandelani Nefolovhodwe and Mark Shinners were the three panellists.
The intergenerational dialogue was titled Understanding the Concepts of Freedom and the three panellists addressed the so-called “born-frees”, who had no recollection or limited knowledge of the Struggle.
Gandhi, a former ANC MP, advised the youngsters to fully understand an issue before taking to the streets to protest.
Nefolovhodwe is the former president of Azapo and worked closely with Steve Biko in the Black Consciousness Movement. He told the pupils to be proud of who they were as Africans and affirm their identity.
Shinners, a member of the PAC, told the teenagers that they had a different battle to fight, which was the land redistribution issue.
“I have confidence in you as you have the wherewithal to deal with this issue,” he said.
