Johannesburg - The cold fronts that are going to sweep South Africa this week are expected to bring snow and heavy rains to parts of the country, with temperatures in Joburg expected to plummet to a low of 0ºC on Sunday.

The first cold front, which was to be accompanied by showers was expected later on Tuesday in the Western Cape, and some parts of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape, however, it was expected to dissipate as it moved towards the east.

Forecaster at the South African Weather Services Edwin Thema said on Tuesday morning that the cold front would be accompanied by very cold and windy conditions with rain.

“There is a possibility of heavy rain in the Cape Peninsula.

“Snow is also expected on Thursday evening on the Western Cape mountains, the southern mountains of the Northern Cape and the Eastern Cape mountains,” he predicted.

Thema said the rain in the Cape Peninsula was expected to spread to the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal - especially the Drakensberg mountains - and all high-lying areas including the neighbouring kingdom of Lesotho.

The cold conditions were expected to reach Gauteng, Mpumalanga and North West from Thursday evening, Thema said.

The following temperatures are expected in Joburg:

Wednesday: 6 – 23ºC

Thursday: 6 – 25ºC

Friday: 2 – 15ºC

Saturday: 1 – 19ºC

Sunday: 0 – 20ºC

Pretoria

Wednesday 5 – 26ºC

Thursday 7 – 26ºC

Friday 3 – 17ºC

Saturday 4 – 20ºC

Sunday 4 – 22ºC
