Johannesburg - “Free education is possible,” EFF national chairperson Dali Mpofu chanted along with a large gathering of Wits University students on Tuesday morning.

He also marched with scores of students around the campus as classes resumed following weeks of protests over university fees.

About 200 of them sang and danced as a strong police presence remained at the university.

Mpofu told the gathering that he was at the university as an ordinary citizen and not on behalf of the EFF.

“We are here as parents... we are here as concerned citizens,” he said, adding that parents and former student leaders should get to campuses to listen to students “instead of relying on the media” for information.

Earlier, police fired stun grenades at students who were gathering in front of the Great Hall.

This was apparently because they were prohibited from gathering as it incited violence.

At the time two students, including Fees Must Fall activist Busisiwe Seabe, were arrested.

Classes resumed at the university on Tuesday after an overwhelming majority of those at the institution voted for it to reopen.

The university has since warned that if lessons don't continue, the university might have to close for the rest of the academic year.

But student leaders have since told The Star that they would continue to shut down the university until their demand for free tertiary education was met.

Following police dispersing the crowds, a large contingent of them remained on the campuses to monitor proceedings.

Many shops as well as the library remained closed.
