Johannesburg - The dramatic rescue of a horse played out in Tembisa in Ekurhuleni on Tuesday after the animal had been lost for three days, stuck in a storm water drain inspection hole.

Netcare 911 paramedics met SPCA officials and the SAPS’s Search and Rescue Unit in Kempton Park to rescue the horse that had fallen into the hole.

According to the horse’s owner, the animal had been missing for three days when he found it in the hole.

The team had to use a carborundum industrial cutter, a concrete chainsaw, a generator, a tractor fitted with a shovel or bucket in the front, and a jackhammer, among other equipment, to free the horse.

After four hours, it was finally freed and taken away by personnel from the Society For Animals In Distress for further medical care.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said paramedics assisted the team by supplying a generator and monitoring the horse’s heart rate.
