Johannesburg - A heatwave is expected to strike this week following a few weeks of cooler conditions brought on by torrential rains across Gauteng.

Temperatures are expected to reach between 31ºC and 37ºC across Gauteng this week, said SA Weather Service forecaster, Lulama Theme, on Monday morning.

“There will be a chance of thunder showers in the afternoons from today, but conditions will be hot especially over Pretoria and the northern parts of the province.”

By Wednesday temperatures in Pretoria and Joburg are expected to reach 37ºC and 32ºC respectively.

Towards the weekend temperatures are, however, expected to cool down, with rain expected over Gauteng.

For the past two weeks, the province experienced a reprieve from hot conditions, with flash floods bringing cooler conditions.

Theme added that other parts of the country including the Karoo, which stretches across the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape, were currently experiencing heatwave conditions.

“From tomorrow the heatwave conditions should break (in those areas),” she said.

“Heatwave conditions were also expected over the Waterberg area in Limpopo as well as the western bushveld.”
