Cape Town - There is no question of guilt or blame for the death of a woman accidentally shot with an air rifle by her young daughter, the Volksblad reported on Monday.

“It was a tragic accident that claimed the life of a wonderful person,” a family spokesman told the newspaper.

The girl, 12, shot her 45-year-old mother in the chest at the family's home in Oude Westhoff, Bellville, Cape Town, on Christmas eve. The air rifle was a present for her 14-year-old brother.

The spokesman denied claims on social networking site Facebook that the woman was shot while the girl was posing for a photo with the rifle.

She was hit in the chest and died in hospital that night. A memorial service was held for her on Saturday.

The result of a post-mortem exam was not yet known. - Sapa
