Johannesburg – One person died and 14 others were injured in a collision between a minibus taxi and a VW Polo in Newlands, Johannesburg, on Saturday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

“Shortly after 8am this morning [Saturday], paramedics from ER24 and other services arrived on the corner of Main and Plantation roads in Newlands where they found a taxi wedged into the side of the Polo, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

One person was still trapped in the Polo and had to be freed by the local fire department. He was in a critical condition.

“All the other occupants, including the deceased, were found on the side of the road. It is understood that bystanders removed all the occupants and placed them on the side of the road prior to emergency workers’ arrival. It is believed that the deceased was removed from the Polo,” he said.

Four people were critically injured in the Polo. They sustained multiple injuries and had to be stabilised on the scene before being rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath, Helen Joseph, and Milpark hospitals.

Ten other people, believed to be from the taxi, were found to have sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were treated on the scene and later transported to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the collision was not yet known. Johannesburg metro police attended the collision and would investigate, Vermaak said.
