Johannesburg - There will be delays in the delivery of February's municipal account statements to residents, the City of Johannesburg said on Wednesday.
“The delay is due to industrial action at the SA Post Office Witspos mail sorting centre,” spokesman Kgamanyane Maphologela said in a statement.
“Customers are encouraged to call 0860 Joburg (562874) for their balance due and stipulated due date.”
Maphologela said because of the strike residents might not receive their new property valuations in time as per the City's General Valuation 2013 project.
Those who were interested in viewing their new property value were advised to visit the City's website Ä www.joburg.org.za. They could also visit the City's customer service centres.
Janras Kotsi, group executive in the mail business in the Post Office, said workers embarked on an illegal strike on February 14.
“The information we got is that they were under the impression that they were owed pension money, and some guy took their money to actually take the matter to court, (and) when that never happened they embarked on the strike,” said Kotsi.
He said the Post Office obtained a court interdict on February 19 confirming that the strike was illegal. The principle of no work, no pay would apply.
“The claims of the pension money owed are incorrect, but we are closer to a turning point now.”
The affected depots were Witspos in Ormonde, Johannesburg and Tshwane Mail sorting centres.
