Johannesburg – A three-year-old boy was burnt to death on Friday when a house caught fire in Elsburg, east of Johannesburg, ER24 paramedics have said.

Spokesperson Russel Meiring said when paramedics arrived on the scene they found the home ablaze.

"Fire services were already on the scene battling the blaze. After some time they managed to extinguish the blaze and began their walk-through of the remains. Upon inspection, paramedics and firefighters found the body of a three-year-old boy lying in the ruins," said Meiring.

Meiring said nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead on the scene.

"The mother of the child was assessed and found to have sustained only minor injuries. She was treated and transported to a nearby hospital."

The cause of the fire is not yet known but authorities will be conducting an investigation.
