Johannesburg - Severe thunderstorms were expected to hit Gauteng on Monday and those living in the province have been urged to exercise caution.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an alert, warning that severe thunderstorms could cause flooding, strong winds and hail.

Forecaster Lebogang Mashile (corr) told The Star that this morning  there was a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers in both Joburg and Pretoria today.

Rainfall was also expected for the rest of the week in the province.

“There is a 30 percent chance of rain in both Johannesburg and Pretoria until Saturday,” said Mashile.

Mashile also said a 60 percent chance of showers and thundershowers were expected in the Vaal area on Tuesday.

Mashile said downpours were  also expected in other parts of the country this week including parts of Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.

A cold front approaching the south-west coast of the Western Cape was also expected to bring rainfall.

As downpours are known to have previously caused havoc on the roads, with collisions and fatalities being reported, motorists and pedestrians are urged to exercise caution during the wet weather conditions.

Mashile said temperatures in Gauteng were expected to peak in the high twenties to early thirties.
