Five people died and four others were seriously injured when two cars collided head-on on the road between Eshowe and Durban on Sunday night, police said.

The accident took place on the R66 near Gingindlovu around 7.30pm on Sunday, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said on Monday.

He said Sabelo Mtshali, who was travelling to Durban from Eshowe, apparently lost control of his Mercedes Benz and collided head-on with a white Mazda bakkie, driven by Michael James Rorke.

Sabelo Mtshali, Bheki Mtshali and Mthokozisi Mkhize, 11, died instantly. Rorke and his wife Beverly died at the scene.

Zodwa Mtshali, Mfanafuthi Buthelezi, Aphiwe Mkhize and Amanda Ngubane were taken to the Eshowe provincial hospital for treatment, Mdletshe said.

Aphiwe Mkhize and Ngubane were both believed to be six-months-old, he said.

The Gingindlovu police were investigating a case of culpable homicide, Mdletshe said. - Sapa
