Durban – About 17 children were injured on Monday when bees attacked them at a school in Umkomaas in Kwazulu-Natal, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the swarm of bees attacked the children at a school on Old Main Road.

He said paramedics arrived to find several children waiting in a classroom.

"Paramedics assessed the children and found that 17, aged between 7 and 10, had sustained numerous bee stings," he said in a statement.

The children were treated on scene and then taken to various hospitals for further medical care.

Meiring said some children had been transported privately, before paramedics arrived.
