Durban – Three people were killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision on the R603 In Umbumbulu in Pietermaritzburg late on Saturday night, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene and found debris from the two vehicles scattered across the scene. Three people were found with fatal injuries trapped inside one of the cars. Four people were found with various injuries ranging from moderate to severe, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said on Sunday.

ER24’s rescue team had to use the jaws-of-life to free them from the wreckage. The injured occupants were treated on the scene and transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

In a second incident, a man was killed and three others were injured in a crash on the N3 near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza.

“Paramedics treated three people for moderate injuries before transporting them to a nearby hospital. Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for one of the occupants. He was later declared dead on the scene,” Vermaak said.
